Religion and Indigenous Conflict Resolution in Africa Project (RICRAP)

Start Date: January 2023

Country Case Studies: Kenya, Nigeria, Algeria. DR Congo, and Zimbabwe


The African Regional Comparative Conflict Analysis Project (ARCCAP) is one of the initiatives of the CRCA to deliver on this objective. Using a five (5) country case study comprising Kenya, Nigeria, Algeria, DR Congo, and Zimbabwe, the ARCCAP seeks to answer four (4) major questions:


1. What are the nature and dynamics of contemporary armed conflicts in Africa?

2. Who are the actors that shape these conflicts?

3. What is the transnational dimension of these conflicts?

4. How well understood are the sources and dynamics of conflict in Africa?

The Religion and Indigenous Conflict Resolution in Africa Project (RICRAP) is one of the initiatives of the CRCA to deliver on this objective by studying indigenous conflict resolution in Africa. Using a qualitative approach, and a three (3) country case study comprising Nigeria, Cameroun, and Ghana, the RICRAP seeks to answer five (5) major questions as follows:


1. How do indigenous communities understand the concept of conflict resolution?

2. What are the traditional systems of conflict resolution that exist within these communities?

3. How central is religion in indigenous conflict resolution in Africa?

4. To what extent have they been integrated into contemporary conflict resolution in Africa?

5. To what extent are indigenous conflict resolution systems structurally and operationally capable of dealing with contemporary conflicts in Africa?
